Is a Pressure Regulator Necessary?
Yes, and especially necessary in a high pressure area. The job of a pressure regulator is to protect the building plumbing or houseline plumbing from damaging high pressure and to keep the pressure constant. High pressure may result in
slab leaks,
other water leaks or fixture damage. In certain areas with high pressure, it is recommended to have a regulator at the water meter to protect the irrigation system, in addition to the one installed at the house or structure. Your local water district can give you the "static pressure" in the street.

Where Is the Pressure Regulator Located?
It is usually installed at the point where the water ties into the structure plumbing, or it may be located in the garage. There may be another one installed at the customer side of the water meter at the curb.
How Can I Check the Pressure?
As a courtesy service to its customers, many local water districts may loan out a regulator gauge to use to determine the pressure inside the structure. The gauge needs to be attached to a hose bib or a washing machine valve. Call your local water district for further information, or call Doolan Plumbing for how-to info.
Low or No Pressure Remedies
To remedy low pressure, the regulator may need to be adjusted. Use the regulator gauge to make adjustments. Follow the instructions provided by your water district, or call Doolan Plumbing with any question you may have.
High Pressure
If you feel the pressure in your home is too high (over 65 psi is too high), and the regulator will not manually adjust to a lower pressure, it's a good assumption that the regulator is failing, and should be replaced. You shouldn't delay getting a new pressure regulator installed when it's needed because high pressure in your home may result in unnecessary leaks, fixture damage, a slab leak or other water leaks.
