This is an easy way to find a
water leak:
The water meter is generally located in the ground in front of your house, close to the street. Go to your water meter when there are no water-using appliances being run, or used on the property; no one taking a shower or flushing toilets or using the washing machine, etc. Take the lid off the meter. If the numbers on the meter, or if a dial on the meter is moving, or spinning, even slightly, there's a water leak. The difficulty now is to find the source. Some Things to Look for:
Could be in the lawn. If there's a patch of lawn that is growing faster and is greener, that could signify a cracked irrigation line at that spot in the lawn.
A toilet could be running and then stopping. A toilet constantly running, or running then stopping, uses a tremendous amount of water.
An irrigation system that needs to be reset. When there is a power outage, the system may revert back to the default settings. So, let's say, you may have adjusted the timer to water every other day. After a power outage, with some systems, it will revert back to watering everyday or to whatever the default settings were. It's a good idea to check your irrigation setting periodically, and especially after a power outage. Dripping faucets in the bathrooms and/or kitchen, or an outside hose bib could be the culprit.
